Dressing for a Girls’ Night Out

* Written in collaboration with Michael Hill

Getting together with girlfriends is always a treat, especially when you get to dress up! I am going to a movie fundraiser night in a few weeks time – a comfy recliner chair, a glass of champagne, some delicious canapés and raising money for a great cause are very easy to RSVP to. Being able to share this night with friends will make it even better. I have put together a few different looks to inspire you to dress a little differently on a girls’ night out.

Look One – Dresses

Girls' Night Out Dresses

1. Target Fixed Wrap Linen Dress – $59 | 2. Katies Geometric Shirt Dress – $59.95 | 3. Rubi Blossom Peep – $19.95 | 4. Michael Hill Filigree Bangle – $229 | 5. Michael Hill Key Pendant – $149 | 6. Diana Ferrari Bionda heel – $149.95 | 7. Portmans Monty Shirt Dress – $89.95 | 8. Witchery Smock Front Dress – $129.95

A dress is the perfect lazy girl outfit. It’s something you can throw on (and most of the time they don’t need to be ironed – win win!) and feel great. A shirt style dress, or smock dress are the perfect casual option for a dinner and movie with friends, or a relaxed lunch. You can team them with heels or flats, and dress them up with jewellery or a belt. Most of the dresses I featured above all have defined waists or belts, which is the style that I am drawn to because of my body shape. Luckily there seem to be a few around this season! A relaxed dress is also a good idea if you’re going out for dinner – there is nothing worse than being uncomfortable in tight clothing after a nice meal.

I have had a jewellery crush on key pendants since I first saw them a couple of years ago, but have yet to take the plunge and purchase one. Choosing a necklace with a long chain will make it a feature of your outfit, while a short chain can put it pride of place on your neckline. Bangles or bracelets can be stacked with others to make an arm party, or worn alone to make sure they are noticed. The featured styles are all very on-trend, and can be found at many chain and jewellery stores, including the favourites I found at Michael Hill.

There are lots of stylish chunky heels around this season, and wedges are still on trend, so there will be a lot of choice in the shoe department. I am looking forward to the cute flats and summery sandals that will be hitting the shops. A pedicure will be on the agenda before my girls’ night!

Look Two – Separates

Girls' Night Out Separates

1. Portmans Silk Tank – $69.95 | 2. Ingrid Woven Front Printed Tee – $49.99 | 3. Target Basic Knit Tank Top – $9 | 4. Target Hot Options Aztec Print Pant – $15 | 5. Jeans West Curve Embracer Skinny Jeans – $79.99 | 6. Katies Mosaic Printed Soft Pant – $19.95 | 7. Michael Hill Sterling Silver Wave Ring – $139 | 8. Rubi Classic Point Flat – $5 (on sale) | 9. Betts Phuket Sandal – $79.99 | 10. Diana Ferrari Yukon Sandal – 129.95 | 11. Michael Hill Ceramic Watch – $479

Comfortable pants and a cute top are a great option for a casual girls night. They would be very comfortable for a movie night, especially in reclining chairs. Patterned pants are still having a big fashion moment this year, with lots of new patterns and styles hitting the shops. I love the splashes of colours in the Target Aztec pants (and the price isn’t half bad, either!), and pairing them with different coloured accessories will make various colours pop. A blazer or cropped denim jacket can be added if the weather (or movie theatre) are feeling chilly.

Pairing these outfits with simple accessories like a chunky silver ring or bangle, and an oversized watch like the ones featured above will keep your outfit simple and classic. The white singlet outfit would also look great with a pendant or jewelled necklace.

A casual outfit can be dressed up with wedges or heels, and there are many that can also add a pop of colour. You can also add a bright scarf or handbag to compliment the rest of your outfit.

Now that we’ve all had some outfit inspiration, it’s time to grab some friends, find somewhere fun to go, and enjoy!

What is your favourite girls’ night out outfit? Where is your favourite place to go with your friends?

  1. I’m a recent convert to boyfriend ripped jeans and shirt-style dresses – they’re my go to outfits for a chicks night out. Love the Portmans one you’ve featured up the top and can see you in that 😉
